Manual
M8Thor 0.3.0 Beta 1, topic by topic. On the start page, type man or man <topic> in the command line.
Getting started
man start · Requirements, first launch, connecting your M8 and choosing the backup folder
Requirements
- A Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later.
- Your Dirtywave M8, connected via USB and switched to USB drive mode.
- That's it. M8Thor ships its own rsync and its own players for chip tunes, so you don't need to install anything else.
First launch
The very first time you open M8Thor, a short setup walks you through four steps: WELCOME, FOLDER, NOTIFICATIONS, CONNECT.
- FOLDER: here you see your backup folder with its free space and an INTERNAL DISK or EXTERNAL DRIVE badge. Want a different one? Pick it with CHOOSE FOLDER…. If you never choose one, your backups go to
~/Backups. A tip from me: an external drive keeps your backups safe even if your Mac fails. - NOTIFICATIONS: ALLOW NOTIFICATIONS asks macOS for permission. If you said no at some point before, OPEN NOTIFICATION SETTINGS takes you straight to System Settings.
- CONNECT: connect your M8 via USB in USB drive mode, or put its SD card in a card reader. As soon as the card is mounted, the step shows M8 DETECTED · <NAME>. With NAME THIS CARD you give it a name of up to 24 characters, and that name shows up wherever the card does: Backup, Browse, HISTORY, the menu bar. SAVE keeps it, SKIP leaves the card without one. Don't worry, the card itself is not changed. This is also where you can turn on "Back up when connected" (auto-backup, see
man backup). - NEXT → (or Return) moves on, ← BACK goes back, SKIP SETUP ends the setup, and FINISH on the last step saves your choice. You'll only see the setup this once.
- Already had a backup folder set, or backups in it? Then M8Thor skips the setup for you.
The main window
- The title bar holds five tabs: BACKUP, RESTORE, BROWSE, REMOTE, SETTINGS (⌘1 to ⌘5). While the sample editor is open, EDITOR · <FILE> sits beside them and brings it forward.
- Keep an eye on the little dots. A dot on RESTORE means edits are staged and waiting to be applied. A dot on BACKUP means a connected card has changes or no backup yet.
- Only one copy of M8Thor runs at a time. If you open it again, the running copy simply comes to the front.
How the card is detected
- You don't have to do anything: M8Thor scans mounted volumes automatically whenever a volume mounts or unmounts. If you want to scan again yourself, press ⌘R or SCAN NOW.
- A volume counts as an M8 card if it has
System/STARTUP.m8s, or both aSongsand anInstrumentsfolder at its root. - Got other gear too? With SETTINGS › Advanced › "Recognize other SD cards" on, SD cards and USB drives from other devices can be backed up as well (badge OTHER CARD). See
man backup.
Backing up your card
man backup · Preview what changed, confirm, and get a verified, space-saving snapshot
The card view
Once your M8 card is mounted, the BACKUP tab tells you everything about it at a glance:
- its name (click the pencil to name the card, up to 24 characters; the volume name then shows below it) and a status badge such as CONNECTED • READY, CONNECTED • NO BACKUP YET or CONNECTED • 12 CHANGES FOUND,
- UUID, MOUNT, SIZE, FOLDER, CONTENTS (counts of songs, instruments, samples…), the NOTE of your latest backup, if you wrote one (notes are added in
man restore), and FIRMWARE once M8Thor knows your M8 (man firmware), - a sidebar with NEXT BACKUP, STATUS, SINCE LAST, ESTIMATE (FULL) (a rough time estimate), DESTINATION, KEEP, and RECENT (a size bar chart and your last five backups).
- STATUS compares the card with your latest backup by file size and date. When it lists changes, SHOW CHANGES opens a window with exactly the files that differ.
- More than one card connected? Then a row of cards sits on top, each with its name, an M8 or OTHER CARD badge and a status dot. M8 cards come first; click one to show it.
- A card with no backup and no name yet greets you with NEW CARD FOUND — NAME IT: type a name and SAVE, or LATER. The name shows wherever the card does: Backup, Browse, HISTORY, the menu bar. The banner never holds anything up; the countdown, a backup and EJECT carry on while it shows.
Run a backup
- Press START BACKUP (first backup) or RUN BACKUP.
- The confirmation shows
Backup to <folder>/<set>?and a preview:N new,N modified,N deleted(expand it for a per-folder list), or "No changes detected". - Optional, once a previous backup exists: expand FOLDERS to pick what to back up (ALL / NONE).
SystemandThemesare always included. TurnSongsoff to pick single songs; samples used by those songs are included automatically. Folders you leave out keep their state from the previous backup, so every version stays complete. - Optional: CHANGE DESTINATION… writes this one backup as a standalone full copy to another folder, e.g. an external drive (badge FULL · EXTERNAL). USE DEFAULT undoes it. It is not a permanent setting.
- Press CONFIRM. CANCEL goes back.
While it runs, you see BACKING UP, the elapsed time, N FILES LEFT, a progress bar and a log. "READING CARD…" just means rsync is checking files it does not need to copy. CANCEL stops the backup, and an unfinished backup is never published, so nothing half-done ends up in your history. Need your screen back? The button next to CANCEL (⇧⌘M) shrinks the window to a small progress strip, and EXPAND brings it back.
When it's done, you get "Backup successful (…)" with CLOSE and EJECT, or an error with RETRY, REPORT PROBLEM and EJECT.
What you get
- Each backup is a full snapshot. Unchanged files are hardlinked to the previous backup, so they take no extra disk space. Every version is complete, and your disk stays happy.
- When a previous backup exists, files are compared by checksum during the copy.
- "Verify with checksums" (off by default) compares the copied files once more after the backup.
- "Rotate old backups" (on by default) keeps the newest N snapshots per card (1–30, default 5) and deletes older ones. If the new backup holds far fewer files than the previous one, older backups are kept and you get a warning to check the card.
- "Eject on completion" unmounts the card after a successful backup.
You'll find these toggles under the card when it is idle; they are the same settings as in man settings.
Other SD cards
Your M8 isn't the only box with an SD card? Turn on SETTINGS › Advanced › "Recognize other SD cards" and back up SD cards and USB drives from other devices the same way: versions, rotation, checksums, Browse, Restore. A few things stay M8-only:
- no FOLDERS or single-song selection: an OTHER CARD is always backed up whole,
- no auto-backup when it is connected and no automatic eject (it may take its whole device along),
- in Browse, no song details, no USED IN and no UNUSED filter, and no staging of edited samples to it.
Auto-backup
If "Back up when connected" is on, connecting an M8 card while M8Thor runs starts a countdown ("Auto-backup starting in 5s…") with a CANCEL button, then backs up the whole card without the confirmation step. Plug in, lean back.
After a backup
- A sound plays and a notification ("Backup Complete" / "Backup Failed") appears, if you've enabled them.
- HISTORY opens the card's backup folder in Finder. EJECT (or ⌘E, Eject All) unmounts the M8 cards.
M8 firmware
man firmware · New firmware for your M8: M8Thor finds it, fetches it from Dirtywave and copies it to the card
No more hunting for the right firmware file: M8Thor can bring new Dirtywave firmware straight to your M8's card. The firmware is Dirtywave's, of course. M8Thor downloads it from Dirtywave's GitHub only after you accept Dirtywave's EULA, and never changes it.
How M8Thor knows your M8
- To offer you the right file, M8Thor needs your M8's model and firmware version. It asks the M8 when it is connected by USB in its normal mode (not in USB drive mode), and never while its card is in use. SETTINGS › Advanced › "Identify M8 when connected" takes care of this (default on); REMOTE learns it too when it connects (
man remote). - Once an M8 is known, M8Thor asks Dirtywave's GitHub (github.com/Dirtywave/M8Firmware) once a day for a new release. Nothing about you or your M8 is sent. If you'd rather not, SETTINGS › Updates › "Check for M8 firmware" turns this off (default on).
- The BACKUP card then shows FIRMWARE: what your M8 reports and the LATEST release, or LAST CHECK FAILED. GET there fetches a release that no banner offers, e.g. a new letter of the same version (DISMISS hides that one) or one you put off with NOT NOW.
Update from the card
- Switch the M8 to USB drive mode. On its own card, the BACKUP tab shows FIRMWARE <VERSION> FOR MODEL:0N with GET FIRMWARE. NOT NOW hides the offer for this release.
- GET FIRMWARE shows Dirtywave's EULA (DIRTYWAVE M8 FIRMWARE · EULA) the first time and whenever its text changes. ACCEPT downloads the firmware, DECLINE stops.
- COPY TO CARD puts the file for your model in the card's root. If the card has changes that are not backed up yet, BACK UP FIRST runs a backup before. While a backup or restore holds the card, the copy waits.
- Then follow the steps shown: save your project, EJECT CARD and exit USB-DRIVE on the M8, PROJECT > SYSTEM SETTINGS > FIRMWARE UPDATE, select the file and confirm. Do not remove the card. If it fails, update over USB.
Good to know
- An M8 older than 6.6.0 cannot update from the card. You'll see FIRMWARE <VERSION> NEEDS 6.6 OR NEWER ON THE M8, and USB INSTRUCTIONS opens Dirtywave's page for the USB update.
- NEW FIRMWARE FOUND — MODEL NOT VERIFIED means M8Thor doesn't know yet which M8 this card belongs to. Leave USB drive mode once so it can ask the M8 (or turn on "Identify M8 when connected").
- Nothing on your card is replaced. If another file with that name is there: ANOTHER <FILE> IS ON THE CARD — NOTHING WAS CHANGED. If it's the same file: <FILE> IS ALREADY ON THE CARD.
- With auto-eject on, a backup of this card leaves it mounted once, so the firmware can still be copied: BACKUP DONE — COPY FIRMWARE? THE CARD WAS NOT EJECTED FOR IT.
- Once your M8 runs the new firmware, M8Thor offers to tidy up and take the file off the card: REMOVE or KEEP. Later, REMOVE FILE in the FIRMWARE row does the same. Only files M8Thor put there are removed.
Restoring a backup
man restore · Five-step wizard to write any backup version back to an SD card
Getting your stuff back is easy, whether it's a whole card or just a few songs. The RESTORE tab guides you through five steps: TARGET, SET, VERSION, SELECTION, CONFIRM. Use NEXT → and ← BACK in the footer, or click an earlier step in the stepper to jump back.
01 Target
First, pick the card to write to. M8 cards are listed first, then blank FAT32 or exFAT cards (badge NO M8 FILES). The volume your backups live on is never offered, so you can't accidentally restore onto your own backups. Each card shows SIZE, FREE and FS. No card? Connect your M8 in USB drive mode or insert an SD card, then REFRESH.
02 Set
Next, pick a backup set (one per source card). Badges help you find the right one: MATCH (the set belongs to the selected card), BACKUP IN PROGRESS, N PENDING (staged edits, with an APPLY N button). A set with "NO COMPLETED BACKUP YET" cannot be selected.
03 Version
Now pick a snapshot. The newest is marked LATEST, and each shows its date, size and note. For every version you have a few handy buttons:
- Note button ("Add note" / "Edit note"): add, edit or delete a BACKUP NOTE. Future you will be grateful for a line like "before the big remix".
- Browse button ("Browse backup contents"): opens BROWSE BACKUP. Click files for details (song tempo, instruments, samples; play audio), reveal them in Finder, drag them out, or copy a file or folder to the selected card. Esc closes it.
- "Export as ZIP" button: exports the version as a
.zipfile with progress. - COMPARE (two or more versions): choose VERSION A (BASE) and VERSION B (COMPARED) to list added, modified and deleted files.
- Trash button (next to the note, browse and ZIP buttons): moves the version to the Trash, see Moving a version to the Trash below.
04 Selection
- Full Backup: restores all folders and files of the version.
- Folders: toggle root folders (ALL / NONE). Turn a folder off and open its caret to pick subfolders or files. For
Songschoose Full Folder or Single Songs. IfSamplesis not selected, samples used by the selected songs are included automatically, so your songs won't come back silent.
05 Confirm
One last look before anything is written: review SOURCE BACKUP, TARGET DEVICE, MODE, VERSION, SELECTION, SONGS, AUTO SAMPLES and NOTE.
- Only files OLDER than the backup are overwritten. Files that are newer on the card are not changed, and files that are not in the backup stay on the card. Nothing is deleted.
- PREVIEW lists the files that differ before you commit.
- ▶ START RESTORE runs it. RESTORING… shows a log and CANCEL.
- Result: RESTORE COMPLETE or RESTORE FAILED with the reason, and the files that were kept because the card's copy is newer. CLOSE or EJECT.
Safety
- One operation per card at a time: a restore cannot start while a backup runs on that card.
- The card is checked before and after the restore; if it was unplugged, you are told the target may be partially restored.
- Pending sample edits are applied from this tab too, see
man stage.
Moving a version to the Trash
Running low on space? The trash button in 03 VERSION (or, in BROWSE, right-click a version in the sidebar › MOVE TO TRASH…) opens a sheet that tells you how much space the version frees:
- "Frees about <size> when you empty the Trash." Unchanged files are shared between versions through hardlinks, so a version often frees far less than its size. On drives without hardlinks, e.g. exFAT, it frees its full size.
- "Frees almost nothing — its files are shared with other backups."
"You can put it back from the Trash." MOVE TO TRASH moves it. When a version can't be moved, the button tells you why:
- THE LAST BACKUP OF A CARD IS ALWAYS KEPT
- THIS BACKUP IS IN USE — a restore, a ZIP export, SAVE A COPY… or an open sample editor reads it.
- THIS BACKUP HAS PENDING EDITS
- A BACKUP OR RESTORE IS RUNNING — also while a backup waits for CONFIRM or counts down.
- THIS VOLUME HAS NO TRASH — e.g. some network drives; nothing is deleted.
Rotation still deletes the oldest versions permanently, as before (man settings).
Browsing backups
man browse · Look inside any backup version or Mac folder: move with the keys, audition, search, see where samples are used
Layout
- Top left, SETS: your own collections of samples from any card and any Mac folder, see
man sets. - Under them, BACKUP SETS: one per card, each under its name. Open one and you see its versions (date and time, the newest marked LATEST). A set with staged edits shows a dot with the count and a PENDING (N) row (see
man stage). Time to tidy up? Right-click a version › MOVE TO TRASH… moves it to the Trash (man restore). - Under it, MAC FOLDERS: the folders on your Mac you added to browse, see
man mac. - In the middle, the file list (NAME, SIZE, MODIFIED), with a glyph and a kind tag for every file. Above it sits the path of the folder you are in; it folds to what fits.
..takes you up. - On the right, a preview of the selected file.
- The pane that doesn't have the keys dims its selection, so you always know where your keys go.
Keys and the cursor
The list has one mark, the cursor. It is the selection, and the preview always shows the row it is on. The list scrolls along, so you never lose it.
- In BACKUP SETS: ↑ ↓ pick a version, Return or → take you into its files.
- In the list: ↑ ↓ move the cursor. → enters a folder, an archive (
man archives) or a module (man chips); on a sample it opens the sample editor, just as EDIT does. ← leaves the folder; at the top of a version it takes you back to the versions. - Return opens the row, as a click does. Space plays or stops the sample or chip tune under the cursor. Esc stops it and turns AUDITION off.
- A double-click opens an archive or a module, like →.
- F adds the file under the cursor to the TARGET set (
man sets). - Clicking a row gives it the cursor and the keys.
AUDITION and LOOP
- AUDITION is made for digging: while it is on, ↑ ↓ play every sample and chip tune they land on; on other rows the sound stops. Starting a sample from the list (its ▶ or Space) turns it on, and turning it off stops the sound.
- LOOP, next to AUDITION: every sample and tune you hear in Browse repeats until you stop it, and so does the next one. Switch it while something plays and it applies at once.
- Both stay as you set them for the whole session, across folders and versions.
- Opening the sample editor stops whatever Browse is playing.
Search
- Lost a sample somewhere? ⌘F focuses the search field (SEARCH THIS BACKUP, or SEARCH THIS FOLDER inside a folder; switch between THIS FOLDER and WHOLE BACKUP).
- The filter menu: ALL, SONGS, INSTRUMENTS, SAMPLES, THEMES, SCALES, BUNDLES, RENDERS, UNUSED, OTHER, HISTORY (another card's version: ALL, SAMPLES, OTHER, HISTORY). A filter works without a search term too, so you can simply list all your SONGS, say.
- UNUSED lists the samples that no song or saved instrument in this version uses. It waits until every song has been read (INDEXING REFERENCES…), so it never guesses.
- HISTORY lists every sample with a saved edit, from any card or Mac folder, newest first. Each row tells you where it is from (the card's name and the backup's day), and it plays, opens and stages right there. SEARCH HISTORY narrows it by name.
- Audio results show USED IN … or UNUSED, and a row's tooltip names the card and the backup it is from. Return on a hit jumps straight to it.
- Search does not look inside archives or modules.
Previews
- SONG (
.m8s): BPM, INSTRUMENTS, SAMPLES, SIZE, MODIFIED and the song's sample list (✓ found, ✗ missing in this version). Play samples from the list, or click one to preview it (← BACK TO <SONG>). ↓ RESTORE TO <CARD> copies only the song file to the connected M8, overwriting a file with the same name; its samples are not copied. - SAMPLE (wav, aif, aiff, mp3, flac, ogg, m4a, caf): waveform, ▶ PLAY, EDIT, FORMAT, SAMPLE RATE, BIT DEPTH, CHANNELS, DURATION (from one minute on as minutes and seconds, e.g. 37:38.84), SIZE, MODIFIED, and USED IN: the songs and instruments that use it. Click the waveform or EDIT to open the sample editor (
man editor). An EDITED badge means the editor keeps saved settings for this sample; the file itself is unchanged. BACKUP AFFECTED SONGS copies the songs that use this sample into a new folder on your Desktop. - MODULE, SID TUNE, TFMX TUNE: see
man chips. ZIP ARCHIVE, LHA ARCHIVE, AMIGA DISK: seeman archives. - Other files: KIND, SIZE, MODIFIED.
- SAVE A COPY… saves any file anywhere outside your backup folder.
Browsing never changes a backup or a Mac folder, so look around as much as you like.
Chip tunes
man chips · Tracker modules, C64 SID and Amiga TFMX tunes: play them live, open their samples, render a stretch into the editor
What plays
- Tracker modules: every format libopenmpt reads — MOD, XM, S3M, IT, Future Composer, SoundFX, Soundtracker, ICE, 669, DigiBooster, Symphonie, OctaMED, Oktalyzer and more — also when they are packed with PowerPacker, XPK, MMCMP or UMX. Named
song.fcor the Amiga way,fc.song: M8Thor knows both (mod.nameis a module). - C64 SID tunes (
.sid, PSID and RSID). - Amiga TFMX (Chris Hülsbeck) and Jochen Hippel tunes:
mdat.<name>with itssmpl.<name>, or.mdat/.smpl,.tfx/.sam,smpl.set,.hip,.hipc,.hip7,.mcmd,.sog,.soc,.s7g. PowerPacked files are unpacked into the cache for you.
Play live
- PLAY in the preview, a row's ▶ or Space plays the whole song live, right away. Press it again to stop. LOOP (
man browse) repeats it. - With AUDITION on, ↑ ↓ play every tune they land on. A lovely way to dig through a big collection.
- A SID tune's TUNE n/N and a TFMX tune's SONG n/N, in the preview column, pick what PLAY plays; pick a new one and it switches at once.
- The previews show MODULE: TYPE, CHANNELS, LENGTH, SAMPLES, SIZE · SID TUNE: RELEASED, TUNES, CHIP, FORMAT, SIZE · TFMX TUNE: FORMAT, SONGS, VOICES, LENGTH, SAMPLES, SIZE.
A module's samples
Here's a treat: a module opens like a folder (→, Return, a double-click or OPEN SAMPLES) and shows you its instrument samples as WAV files. They play, audition and open in the editor like any other sample. STAGE FOR CARD stages one as FROM MODULE, and ADD TO CARD adds them to the card (man mac). ← takes you back.
Settings and OPEN IN EDITOR
A module's, SID's or TFMX tune's preview column holds its settings. You hear every change at once while it plays, and OPEN IN EDITOR renders exactly what is set into the sample editor:
- PLAY / STOP, LOOP and a timeline with the chosen range and the playhead: a click jumps there, the range's edges drag START and its end, and a drag inside moves the whole range.
- START and LENGTH knobs (LENGTH is 30 s until you set it, 5 minutes at most), WHOLE for the whole song; a module's CHANNELS, a SID or TFMX tune's VOICES, a SID tune's CHIP (AS TUNE, 6581, 8580). Channels and voices you switch off are silent. The wheel scrolls the column; ⌥ + wheel turns the knob under the pointer.
- Mutes, START and LENGTH are heard at once; a new SID chip or subtune and far jumps take a short SEEKING… first.
- What you hear is what gets rendered: OPEN IN EDITOR (RENDERING… while it works) writes it — modules and TFMX as 44.1 kHz stereo, SID as 44.1 kHz mono — and opens it in the editor. If another sample is open there, M8Thor asks first (
man editor). - The render is staged for the M8 as 44.1 kHz · 16-bit, with the badge FROM MODULE, FROM SID or FROM TFMX. From an old demo tune to a fresh sample, ready for your card, in a few clicks.
Archives and Amiga disks
man archives · ZIP and LHA/LZH archives and Amiga disk images (ADF, ADZ, DMS) open like a folder
Opening
- Found an old sample pack or an Amiga disk from back in the day? ZIP archives (
.zip), LHA archives (.lha,.lzh) and Amiga disk images (.adf, gzip'ed.adzand DMS,.dms) open like a folder: →, Return, a double-click or OPEN in the preview. ← leaves. The preview calls them ZIP ARCHIVE, LHA ARCHIVE or AMIGA DISK. - They are unpacked once into M8Thor's cache (
~/Library/Caches/M8Thor/Archives, up to 2 GB, oldest removed first). The archive itself is only read; nothing is written next to it. LHA and DMS files are unpacked by a separate helper process, so a broken file can only fail that one unpack. - Inside, modules, SID tunes and WAVs play, audition and open (a module's samples too), OPEN IN EDITOR works, and EDIT stages a sample as FROM ZIP, FROM LHA, FROM ADF (an ADZ counts as ADF) or FROM DMS.
- ADD TO CARD puts the files under a folder named like the archive:
Packs/drums.zip→Packs/drums/…. The same goes for an opened module's samples.
Limits
- Amiga disks: AmigaDOS disks (OFS and FFS). A demo or game disk without files still shows the modules that lie unpacked on it, named after the module or RIPPED n.mod; with none it says NO FILES ON THIS DISK — A DEMO OR GAME KEEPS ITS MUSIC PACKED INSIDE. Long-filename disks (DOS\6, DOS\7) are not supported.
- DMS: M8Thor unpacks the disk inside and reads it like an ADF; password-protected DMS files are decoded too. A DMS that holds no Amiga disk (MS-DOS or FMS) shows THIS DMS HOLDS NO AMIGA DISK, and a broken one THIS DMS IS DAMAGED.
- ZIP: stored and deflated files. Encrypted files, other compression methods and links are skipped and counted (e.g. 2 FILES SKIPPED: ENCRYPTED). ZIP64 and split ZIPs are not supported.
- LHA/LZH: files with a method M8Thor can't unpack and links are skipped and counted, too (e.g. 1 FILE SKIPPED: UNSUPPORTED METHOD). LZX archives are not supported.
- At most 1 GB and 10 000 files per archive.
- Search does not look inside archives.
Mac folders
man mac · Browse folders on your Mac and add their samples to the card
Add a folder
- Your samples live all over the place? In BROWSE, ADD MAC FOLDER… under MAC FOLDERS picks a folder on your Mac. You browse it level by level, just like a backup version, with the same keys, previews, AUDITION and LOOP.
- M8Thor only reads these folders. A folder you rename or move is found again; one that is gone shows NOT FOUND. Right-click › REMOVE FOLDER takes it off the list, and the folder itself stays where it is.
To the card
- EDIT a sample, then STAGE FOR CARD: it becomes a new file on the card, with the badge FROM MAC FOLDER. The Mac file is not changed.
- ADD TO CARD… (right-click on files or folders): pick the FOLDER ON THE CARD; files keep their folders below it, and names the card can't take are cleaned up. The sheet shows FILES, SIZE, COPIED AS THEY ARE, CONVERTED, STAGED SIZE and FREE ON BACKUP DRIVE. ADD N FILES stages them, at most 200 files at a time.
- Everything staged is written for the M8 as 44.1 kHz · 16-bit WAV. A WAV that already is exactly that is copied byte for byte; other files are converted, cue markers included. No need to think about formats.
- Staged files never overwrite anything: they wait as pending edits of the set you browsed in, and you apply them from PENDING when the card is connected (
man stage).
Sets
man sets · Collect samples from any card and any Mac folder, then stage a whole set for a card
While digging through your samples, you'll find sounds that belong together. A set collects them, from any backup and any Mac folder. It holds references, never copies: the files stay where they are. SETS sit at the top of BROWSE's sidebar, above BACKUP SETS.
Make and fill a set
- NEW SET… beside SETS names a new set. Right-click a set for NEW SUBSET… (up to three levels deep), RENAME… and DELETE SET…; deleting a set removes only its references, never your files.
- One set is the TARGET, marked with a dot. F adds the file under the cursor to it, even while AUDITION steps through a folder, so you can collect as fast as you can listen. Right-click another set › MAKE TARGET to change it. A new set becomes the target when there is none.
- Right-click a file or its preview › ADD TO SET adds it to any set; the menu also offers NEW SET…, which names a new set and adds the file to it. A note at the bottom says ADDED TO <SET> or ALREADY IN <SET>.
- In the sample editor, ADD TO SET beside STAGE FOR CARD adds the sample you are editing to a set, or to a NEW SET…. The set gets the whole file, with its slices inside as cue markers, so the M8 can play them as slices; its saved edit goes along when the set is staged.
- A file out of an archive or a module lives in M8Thor's cache: SAVE A COPY FIRST, then add the copy.
A set in the list
- Click a set to open it: its files, each with where it is from (the card's name and the backup's day, MAC · <FOLDER>) or EDITED for a sample with a saved edit, sorted by NAME or ADDED. INCLUDE SUBSETS shows the files of every set below it too.
- They play, audition, loop and open in the editor just as anywhere else in Browse (→ opens the editor). Return shows the file in its folder. ⌫ or right-click › REMOVE FROM SET takes the reference out, and UNDO brings it back; the file stays where it is.
- A file that is no longer where the set expects it is dimmed and cannot play.
STAGE SET FOR CARD
- Set ready? STAGE SET FOR CARD… (in the set's header or its right-click menu) stages every file of the set as a new file in one folder on a card: pick the CARD and the FOLDER ON THE CARD; INCLUDE SUBSETS takes the files of the sets below it too.
- Edited files are rendered with their saved edit (EDITED), the rest go as they are (AS IS). Everything is written as 44.1 kHz · 16-bit.
- Nothing on the card is replaced: a taken name goes in under the next free one (NAME TAKEN → <NAME>), or with SKIP TAKEN NAMES on it is left out. MISSING files are skipped. FILE CHANGED means the file changed since its edit was saved: it is skipped, or with AS IS on it goes without the edit.
- STAGE N stages them. They wait as pending edits of that card's set and are applied from RESTORE like any other (
man stage).
Sample editor
man editor · Trim, fade, slice, loop and process a sample without touching the original
Here's where your samples get their makeover. Open the editor from BROWSE: select a sample, then click its waveform or EDIT, or just press →. Chip tunes come in through OPEN IN EDITOR (man chips). The editor has its own window: resize it as you like, or go full screen with ⌃⌘F. M8THOR at its top left brings the main window forward and leaves the editor open. To get back to the editor, use EDITOR · <FILE> in the main window's title bar, Window › Sample Editor or ⌥⌘0. If you open another sample while one is open, M8Thor asks first: SAMPLE EDITOR HAS <FILE> OPEN — OPEN <OTHER> INSTEAD? Your edit of the open one is saved; only its undo history is lost.
The golden rule
The editor never changes the sample file, the backup or a Mac folder. Your settings are saved automatically per sample and come back when you reopen it (badge SAVED EDIT; RESET ALL discards them). To get the result out, EXPORT… a WAV file, or STAGE FOR CARD (man stage). Nothing to lose, right?
The window
- Top: M8THOR, the file's name, SAVED EDIT and RESET ALL when there is a saved edit, the length, and CPU: how much of each audio block's time the processing takes (hover for the peak since play). It changes colour from 70 % and again from 90 %; at 100 % the sound drops out.
- The page bar: TRIM › SLICE › LOOP › FX › OUTPUT, in the order the sound goes through them (keys 1 to 5), then MIDI (the MIDI window), MIDI LEARN, undo, redo and the zoom.
- The waveform with the marker lane shows your edit itself: NORMALIZE and IN, slices and fades. COMP, TAPE, OUT and the limiter never change the picture; while it plays, COMP's gain reduction hangs from its top edge. On the left sits the GAIN scale with the IN thumb and NORM; on the right the LEVEL scale with the display zoom handle, the OUT fader, the master meter and LIMIT under the fader.
- Below: the page's panel. Every page keeps the same height, so the waveform never jumps around. Drag the edge between them to make the waveform taller or shorter; a double-click sets the default.
- Knobs: drag up or down (⌃ for fine steps), scroll, or use the arrow keys once one has the focus; double-click to type a value, ⌥-click to reset. LED switches light up when they're on. Menus (GRID, SIG, TARGET…) take ↑ ↓, Return and Esc, and typing selects.
Waveform and zoom
- Click or drag on the waveform or the lane to place the playhead; click a slice to hear it. ⇧-click on the lane moves the nearer trim flag there. The I and O buttons and lane flags (keys I and O) set the trim start or end at the playhead.
- Drag from a region's edge to pull a fade; drag its curve to bend it.
- Zoom with ⌘+ ⌘− ⌘0 or pinch. Go all the way in and you see single samples, each drawn as a point.
- Z zooms to the selected slice, or to the trim; Z again takes you back to the view before. While zoomed to a slice, ← → go to the next slice and the view follows.
- X zooms to 100 ms around the handle or marker you touched last (or the playhead); X again goes back. A click, Home, End, ← or → give X back to the playhead. Perfect for fine-tuning a cut.
- Display zoom: the handle on the LEVEL scale draws the waveform taller (up to 16×) or smaller (down to 1/16×), stepless, with 1× in the middle. ⌥-scroll over the waveform does the same; a double-click or ⌥-click is 1×. Only the picture changes, never the sound.
- From one minute on, the header shows lengths as minutes and seconds, e.g. 37:38.84 OF 37:38.84. Undo and redo: ⌘Z / ⇧⌘Z.
Signal flow and gain
Your sound takes this path: slices → NORMALIZE → IN → FX → COMP → TAPE → OUT → LIMITER → DITHER to 16-bit.
- NORM, under the IN thumb on every page: NORMALIZE (key N) brings the trim's loudest peak to 0 dBFS, first in the chain, before IN and the FX. ⌥-click resets it.
- IN, the thumb on the GAIN scale: the sample's gain into the FX (−24 to +24 dB), on top of NORMALIZE. With a slice selected it sets that slice's gain; its caption shows IN or SLICE n. Click the caption (or press Esc) to go back to IN. ⌃-drag for fine steps, ⌥-click resets.
- OUT, the fader beside the meter: the level of what goes to the card, after the FX, COMP and TAPE, before the limiter. Drag (⌃ fine), scroll or arrow keys: 0.1 dB, with ⇧ 1 dB; double-click the number to type one; ⌥-click resets. You can learn it for MIDI, too. OUT on the OUTPUT page is the same gain.
- LIMIT under the fader opens the limiter's panel: LIMIT on or off, CEILING (−12 to −0.1 dBFS, default −0.3), RELEASE (10 to 500 ms, default 80; all the way up is AUTO) and GR, what the limiter takes off, live. You set the limiter's STYLE (CLEAN, PUNCH or LOUD) there too. ⌥ resets CEILING and RELEASE. A click elsewhere or Esc closes it.
- The master meter: L and R (peak and 300 ms RMS) and LU, the loudness. COMP's and the limiter's gain reduction hang from the top in their own lanes, and with LIMIT on the ceiling is a line across it. Above it TP (true peak left and right, the highest since play; a click starts it again) and RMS; below it LUFS (integrated since play) and DR (the higher true peak minus the short-term loudness).
1 · TRIM
- Knobs: TRIM START and END (⌥-click resets them to the file's ends), FADE IN and FADE OUT, each with its CURVE.
- REVERSE plays the sample backwards.
- SNAP TO ZERO (key S): trim edges and slice markers land on the nearest zero crossing within 10 ms, so your cuts don't click. It's the same switch as on SLICE.
- GRID: bars and beats over the waveform, at M8 LOOP's tempo, the detected one (LOOP?), or the one BARS and SIG make of the trim. Click to switch it on or off; ⌥-click leaves it to the tempo again (auto). The menu next to it sets the density (AUTO follows the zoom; BAR, BEAT and note values down to 1/64), CONTRAST how strongly the lines show.
2 · SLICE
- Up to 128 markers, plenty for even the busiest break. Tools: Select (arrow), Add markers (pencil), Remove markers (eraser); CLEAR removes them all. M adds a marker at the playhead.
- MARKERS: EVEN + APPLY makes equal slices. THRESHOLD puts a marker on every hit that reaches the two lines in the waveform; lower it to find quieter hits. It replaces the markers.
- Per slice: GAIN (±24 dB), REVERSE, NORMALIZE, RESET, FADE IN, FADE OUT.
- From three slices on, the list button shows every slice's controls; with AUDITION on, ↑ ↓ play the slice they land on.
- Right-click a slice: PLAY SLICE, REVERSE, NORMALIZE SLICE, RESET GAIN, RESET FADES, ZOOM TO SLICE, EXPORT SLICE…, STAGE SLICE FOR CARD…, DELETE MARKER. Right-click anywhere else: ADD MARKER HERE.
3 · LOOP
- M8 LOOP writes loop points for the trimmed sample into the file, so your M8 loops it in the Sampler. Turning it on loops the preview too.
- A sample's own loop is kept: the M8 plays the start once, then repeats that part. CLEAR removes it; M8 LOOP replaces it with a loop over the whole sample.
- TEMPO: BARS (1–64) and BPM show the loop's tempo, the way the M8 counts it. Turn, type or TAP a tempo, then SET LENGTH trims the loop to it. SIG sets the time signature. The editor suggests a tempo from the file, the name or the length; LOOP? appears when the length fits whole bars.
- With M8 LOOP on: CLICK, a metronome in the preview from the loop start (never exported, don't worry), its VOL, and GRID.
4 · FX
- Bring in up to four Audio Unit plugins from your Mac, one row each, in the order the sound goes through them. ADD PLUGIN under the last row adds one: type to search, or pick it by maker. A row's plugin name opens the plugin's own window; the chevron beside it picks another or removes it. ON switches it (off bypasses it); drag a row's grip to change the order. TAIL, in the page bar, lets effects ring out past the end; the file gets longer.
- Each row has an IN and an OUT dot: green while it sounds, orange when the input goes over the row's TARGET, red when it reaches full scale. It stays lit for 1.5 s after the last over; a click clears it.
- Each row has its own gain staging too: IN (the level into the plugin), TARGET (the input peak the plugin works best at, remembered per plugin), TO TARGET (sets IN so the loudest peak lands on TARGET), OUT (the level out of the slot) and MATCH (sets OUT so the slot leaves the level as it found it). TO TARGET and MATCH measure over the trim, the plugins before included; click again to cancel. No more guessing levels.
- FX n: NO SIGNAL means there was nothing to measure in the trim. NOT ON THIS MAC: <PLUGIN> means the plugin isn't on this Mac; export and staging stop until you install it or remove the slot.
- While a plugin window is in front, MIDI from any connected source goes to that plugin, for its own MIDI learn. Space and Return play as in the editor.
5 · OUTPUT
- The finishing touch: a rack in the order the sound goes through it, COMP › TAPE › OUT › LIMITER › DITHER. A module's name is its on switch; its settings stay while it is off. ⌥-click resets a knob. Under the rack sits a meter from −48 to 0 dB with peak hold, COMP's and the limiter's GR, and CLIP: it lights once samples had to be clamped; a click puts it out.
- COMP has two styles, switched with CLEAN | BUS beside its name. CLEAN: THR, RATIO, ATK, REL, KNEE and MAKEUP, and under them HPF (a sidechain high-pass, 30 to 300 Hz, all the way down is OFF, so the bass doesn't pump it), MIX and HOLD. BUS, in the manner of a classic console bus compressor, the glue: the same knobs, but RATIO steps through 1.5, 2, 4 or 10, ATK through 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, 10 or 30 ms, and REL through 100, 300, 600 ms or 1.2 s, AUTO and FAST (AUTO FAST). Its KNEE follows the ratio and reads BY RATIO.
- AUTO beside COMP's name lets MAKEUP follow what COMP takes off, level-matched, and MAKEUP shows the level it stands at; turning MAKEUP switches AUTO off, and nothing jumps. While it plays, COMP's gain reduction hangs from the waveform's top edge.
- TAPE, a tape-style saturator, has CLEAN | LO-FI beside its name. Its knobs: DRIVE (how hard the tape is driven; the level coming out is kept), BIAS (the tape's bias, −6 to +4 dB, default 0: under is grittier and saturates sooner, over is cleaner and darker), TONE (darker or brighter) and MIX, and under them SPEED (7.5, 15 or 30 ips, default 15; slower is warmer). LO-FI is under-biased tape with more grit (BIAS sets how much) and adds WOW (the pitch drifting, flutter included), HISS and DROP (short dips in level), each at 0 until you turn it up.
- In LO-FI, WOW and its flutter keep in step with your edit's loop (the sample's own loop, or the whole trim with M8 LOOP on; LOOP PREVIEW doesn't count), so the seam stays clean. If the loop is too short for them, TAPE says WOW OFF — LOOP TOO SHORT, or WOW + FLUTTER OFF — LOOP TOO SHORT when even the flutter doesn't fit.
- OUT is the same gain as the fader beside the waveform. LIMITER, a true-peak limiter (8× oversampled, 5 ms look-ahead, which the preview makes up for): CEIL and REL, where REL's top position is AUTO, a release that follows the material; under them STYLE: CLEAN (transparent), PUNCH (keeps the attacks) or LOUD (pushes hardest).
- DITHER is the same switch as SETTINGS › Advanced › "Dither 16-bit files", on by default: it applies to every 16-bit render and export.
Playback and output
- ▶ PLAY / ■ STOP, Space, Return (the whole result from the trim start). LOOP PREVIEW (or L) loops playback in the editor only.
- Samples whose audio fits in 128 MB (about 5.5 minutes of 48 kHz stereo, 11 of mono) play through the live engine: you hear every change at once. Longer ones play a rendered preview, which follows a change after a restart; GR then shows —.
- EXPORT… (⇧⌘E) writes a WAV (default name
<sample>-edit.wav). It refuses to overwrite the original or to write into your backup folder. While a render or an export runs, the footer shows RENDERING and how far it is. - Output is PCM WAV at the source's bit depth where possible (otherwise 16-bit). 16-bit files get a tiny dither noise, so quiet fades don't distort (SETTINGS › Advanced › "Dither 16-bit files"). Slice markers are written as cue points your M8 reads.
- STAGE FOR CARD (⌘Return) queues the result for the card. See
man keysfor all keys andman midifor controllers. - ADD TO SET, beside STAGE FOR CARD, adds the sample to a set or to a NEW SET… (
man sets). The set remembers the original file, and your saved edit is rendered when the set is staged (slices travel as cue markers). A render, a module's sample or a file inside an archive can't go into a set: EXPORT… it first.
MIDI controllers
man midi · Learn knobs, switches and actions of a MIDI controller for the sample editor
Learn
- In the sample editor turn on MIDI LEARN (the button, or K).
- Click a knob or a switch in the editor, or an action in the MIDI window.
- Move a control or press a button on your controller. Done: the mapping is learned.
- Real knobs under your fingers feel so much better than a mouse, don't they? In learn mode a click selects and changes nothing; where the value usually sits, you see what the control is learned on. ⌫ forgets the selected mapping, Esc ends learn mode. Keys that edit do nothing meanwhile.
- A learned knob carries a small dot. With PICKUP, a tick outside its ring shows where the controller stands until it has picked the value up.
- Almost every knob and switch in the editor can be learned, the choosers too: COMP's CLEAN | BUS, TAPE's CLEAN | LO-FI, SPEED and the limiter's STYLE move one choice per step. Not learnable, among others: TARGET, TO TARGET, MATCH, APPLY, TAP, SET LENGTH, SIG, DITHER, COMP's AUTO and the on switches of COMP and TAPE.
- Actions (a button or a pad): play, play the result, restart, previous or next slice, select a slice, add a marker, trim start or end, zoom to the slice or the last touched point, zoom in, out or reset, the five pages, undo and redo.
The MIDI window
MIDI in the editor's page bar opens it: every mapping, the ACTIONS list and the LAST MESSAGE monitor, all in one place. Open a mapping for its options; LEARN AGAIN and FORGET sit on each row.
- Knobs: ENCODER (ABSOLUTE, RELATIVE · 2'S COMPLEMENT, RELATIVE · BINARY OFFSET, RELATIVE · SIGN MAGNITUDE), INVERT, TAKEOVER (PICKUP waits until the controller reaches the knob, JUMP moves it at once), RANGE (the part of the knob the controller's travel covers).
- Trim edges and fades also have SCALE: ZOOM moves by a 256th of what the waveform shows, finer the further in you go; FIXED moves 10 ms a tick (an absolute knob then covers the whole range). An absolute knob with ZOOM moves by how far you turn; at its end, turn back or zoom out.
- Switches on a CC: MODE (TOGGLE follows the button's on and off, MOMENTARY flips on each press) and INVERT. Actions have no options.
Settings › MIDI
- INPUT: the connected DEVICES and LAST MESSAGES. The monitor listens only while the page is open.
- YOUR KNOBS › Detect a knob: press DETECT KNOB, then turn a knob slowly to the right (TURN THE KNOB SLOWLY TO THE RIGHT…), then to the left (NOW TO THE LEFT…). M8Thor shows what it sends, e.g.
CC 21 · CH 1 — ENDLESS ENCODER · RELATIVE · BINARY OFFSET, and asks before it changes anything: YES, USE FOR NEW KNOBS, or, for a knob already learned with other settings, YES, CHANGE <KNOB>. For an absolute knob it suggests switching it to relative in the controller's setup tool. No manual digging needed. - Defaults for new knobs: the ENCODER, INVERT, SCALE and TAKEOVER a knob starts with when you learn it for the first time. Switches and notes keep their own; you can still change each mapping.
- MAPPINGS lists everything learned, with the same options as the MIDI window. CLEAR ALL forgets every mapping; the defaults stay.
Knobs and encoders: setting up your controller
Not sure what your controller sends? Turn a control and read the monitor:
- Values that rise and fall between 0 and 127: a knob, or an endless encoder sending absolute values. Keep ENCODER on ABSOLUTE; on trim and fades SCALE ZOOM moves by how far you turn.
- Values that only say which way: an encoder in relative mode. 1 / 127 is RELATIVE · 2'S COMPLEMENT, 65 / 63 is BINARY OFFSET, 1 / 65 is SIGN MAGNITUDE. DETECT KNOB finds this out for you.
- Relative works best: the knob has no end. Many controllers switch to it in their own setup tool, with a custom mode that sends one value for each direction.
- Example, ParksTool (config.parkstool.com): set the encoder's Content Type to MIDI CUSTOM with right 65 and left 63, then use BINARY OFFSET. ParksTool's own example, 65 left and 63 right, works too with INVERT on.
- A push switch on an encoder: let it send a note and learn it on an action. As a quick workaround, let it type a key (e.g. KEYBOARD "X").
Staging and applying edits
man stage · Queue edited and added samples for the card, then apply them from the Restore tab
Edited and added samples reach your card in two steps: you STAGE them (no card needed), then APPLY them to the card from the RESTORE tab. So you can prepare everything whenever you like, and your M8 only has to join in at the end.
Stage
In the editor, press STAGE FOR CARD (or right-click a slice: STAGE SLICE FOR CARD…).
- SAVE AS NEW: writes a new file. Set NEW FILENAME and FOLDER (it must start with
/Samples/). - REPLACE ORIGINAL: the new file takes the original's place. M8Thor checks which songs and instruments use the sample and warns you ("… MAY BREAK"), then asks "Really replace …?". For non-WAV sources, use Save as New.
- STAGE queues the edit. The original stays untouched in your backup.
- Samples from a Mac folder, an archive or a chip tune are always staged as new files, with their origin: FROM MAC FOLDER, FROM ZIP, FROM LHA, FROM ADF, FROM DMS, FROM MODULE, FROM SID, FROM TFMX. ADD TO CARD stages many at once (
man mac), STAGE SET FOR CARD a whole set (man sets).
Review (no card needed)
Want another look before anything touches the card? In BROWSE, open a set's PENDING (N) row (↑ ↓ move between edits). For each edit you can play the staged file, see KIND, TARGET, SOURCE, ROTATION, STAGED, and use CHANGE TARGET…, OPEN IN EDITOR (reopens with the staged settings; staging again replaces the entry) or DISCARD.
Apply
- The RESTORE tab shows a PENDING EDITS block. For a connected card, press APPLY…; a card that is not connected shows "CONNECT THE M8 TO APPLY". The BACKUP tab points you there too (
N PENDING EDITS → RESTORE). Sets and versions in the restore wizard offer APPLY N as well. - The sheet lists every edit (+ NEW or REPLACE). Tick the ones you want, then APPLY SELECTED and confirm. CHECK CARD reads the songs on the card to see which use a sample you replace.
- Each copy is verified after writing. A new file never overwrites an existing one: you get COLLISION with RENAME instead. Other states: DONE, RETRY, SOURCE MISSING ON CARD, MORE / FEWER SONGS NOW USE THIS SAMPLE.
- DISCARD ALL removes every pending edit (it asks first).
- After a clean apply, BACKUP NOW offers a fresh backup of the changed card. Always a good idea.
- Applying is blocked while a backup or restore runs.
Remote
man remote · Your M8 on the Mac: its screen, its keys from the Mac's keyboard, its USB audio
The REMOTE tab (⌘4) brings your M8 onto your Mac: its screen in a monitor, its keys on the Mac's keyboard and its USB audio through your Mac. For that, your M8 is connected by USB in its normal mode. In USB drive mode its card belongs to backups, so REMOTE politely steps aside.
Connect
- Connect your M8 by USB and the glass says M8 READY. Start the picture with CONNECT on the monitor, ⌘K or Actions › Connect to M8; DISCONNECT stops it. Switch tabs as much as you like, the picture keeps running.
- The monitor follows the app's appearance: a CRT in Dark, an LCD in Light. Below the glass you see your M8's model, firmware and screen size (e.g. MODEL:02 · FW 6.6.3 · 480×320) and its state: READY, CONNECTING, LIVE, RECONNECTING, DISK MODE.
- If another program has the M8's port open, it blocks it: PORT IN USE BY ANOTHER APP. Quit that program, then press RETRY. More messages:
man troubleshoot.
Keys
- Click the M8's screen. While it has the ring (KEYS → M8 below the glass), the Mac's keys play your M8. Click elsewhere, switch tabs or open a sheet, and the keys belong to the Mac again.
- The arrows are the M8's arrows; Z or left ⇧ is SHIFT, X or Space PLAY, A or left ⌥ OPTION, S or Return EDIT, and ⌫ presses OPTION and EDIT together. All keys:
man keys. - Feel like jamming? Esc turns keyjazz on or off, and the letter rows play notes, just like in m8c. KEYJAZZ below the glass shows it with its octave and velocity; − and = change the octave, [ and ] the velocity (with ⌥ in steps of 1).
- Keys go by their place on the keyboard, so they are the same on every layout. SETTINGS › Shortcuts lists them under Remote. They are fixed.
Audio
- AUDIO plays your M8's USB audio on this Mac. VOL is its level here, not the system volume. Beside AUDIO you see how late the sound plays on this Mac, in ms.
- macOS treats the M8's USB audio as a microphone and asks once for access. Don't worry: M8Thor only listens to the M8 and records nothing. Without access the screen and the keys still work (MIC ACCESS DENIED); you can allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.
Disk mode
- When your M8 switches to USB drive mode, REMOTE lets go of it: M8 IN DISK MODE. EJECT CARD ejects the card safely, and your M8 comes back to REMOTE all by itself.
- While a backup, restore or auto-backup holds the card, the button says so and waits. The card is never ejected in the middle of one.
- Taken out of disk mode without ejecting? Then you'll see CARD REMOVED WITHOUT EJECT — EJECT THE CARD BEFORE THE M8 LEAVES DISK MODE.
Settings
man settings · Every setting, what it does and its default
Most of what you can tune in M8Thor lives in SETTINGS. Open it with ⌘5 (tab) or ⌘, (Settings window). The pages: General, Appearance, Backup, Verification, Notifications, Updates, Advanced, MIDI, Shortcuts, About. Where a setting has a default, it is listed below, so you always know where you started.
General
- Launch on login — M8Thor starts when you log in. Default off.
- Menu bar icon — M8Thor keeps running in the menu bar after you close the window. Default off. Click the icon to show or hide the window; right-click it for a menu with each card and its state, "Open Main Window" and "Quit M8Thor".
- Ask to eject on quit — when you quit with a card connected, M8Thor asks: "Eject and Quit", "Quit" or "Cancel", with "Don't ask again". Default on.
Appearance
- Appearance — System, Light, Dark. Default System.
- Accent — pink, lime, amber (default), cyan, violet. Pick the one that glows best for you.
- Typography — Mono (default) or Sans.
- Text size — XS, S, M (default), L, XL.
Backup
- Backup directory — where your backup sets are written; CHOOSE… (not while a backup or restore runs). Default
~/Backups. - Back up when connected — starts a backup a few seconds after you connect an M8 card, with a countdown you can cancel. It applies from the next connect, and the first-launch setup offers it too. Default off.
- Rotate old backups — keeps only the newest backups per card. Default on.
- Rotations per device — how many backups to keep per card, 1–30, default 5. Disabled while rotation is off.
- Auto-eject on completion — unmounts the M8 card after a successful backup. Default off.
Verification
- Checksum pass — re-compares the copied files with checksums after each backup. It takes extra time and buys you extra peace of mind. Default off.
- On mismatch — Retry (try once more), Flag (default: keep an incomplete copy for diagnosis), Abort (discard it). A failed verification never replaces a good backup.
Notifications
- macOS permission — whether macOS lets M8Thor notify you, with a button to ask or to open System Settings.
- Completion — a notification when a backup finishes. Default on.
- Failure — a notification when a backup fails. Default on.
- Play sound — a short chime when a backup ends. Default on.
Updates
- Check for updates automatically — looks for new versions on m8thor.cc in the background. Default on (see
man updates). - App updates — CHECK NOW looks for a new version right away; the row shows the installed version.
- Check for M8 firmware — once an M8 has been connected, asks Dirtywave's GitHub once a day for new firmware (
man firmware). Nothing about you or your M8 is sent. Default on.
Advanced
- Recognize other SD cards — also back up SD cards and USB drives from other devices (
man backup). Default off. - Identify M8 when connected — asks an M8 in normal USB mode for its model and firmware version when it appears, for firmware updates; never while its card is in use. Default on.
- Dither 16-bit files — a tiny noise when the sample editor writes 16-bit files (export and staging), so quiet fades don't turn into distortion. Unedited samples stay bit-exact. Default on.
- rsync — BUILT-IN (M8Thor's own rsync 3.4.4, with xxHash) or HOMEBREW, when Homebrew rsync is installed.
- rsync path, rsync version, Incremental (link-dest), Progress bar (--info=progress2) — read-only checks of the selected rsync.
MIDI
Devices and the monitor, Detect a knob, Defaults for new knobs and the mappings are all explained in man midi.
Shortcuts
- Preset — Standard, Logic or Custom. Coming from Logic Pro? Logic uses Logic Pro's keys wherever the editor does the same thing.
- Click a key to change it; that makes your own set, Custom (from Standard or Logic). Press the new key; Esc cancels, ⌫ removes the key. A key already in use asks to REPLACE it. RESET per row, RESET ALL for the whole set.
- Only the sample editor's keys can change; locked keys (menus, ⌘Z, Esc, lists, Browse, Remote) are the same in every preset.
- Letter and digit keys work by their place on the keyboard and show your layout's letters: on a German keyboard the key for Z shows Y.
- ⌘F searches the list. See
man keys.

Where your data lives
man storage · Backup folder layout, disk space, staged edits, caches, editor settings, sets and firmware
Backup folder
Curious where everything ends up? By default in ~/Backups, or in the folder you chose. Inside it you'll find:
- one folder per card:
<VOLUME NAME>_<last 8 characters of the card UUID> - one folder per backup inside it:
backup-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS, plus alatestlink to the newest one .edits/, which holds staged sample edits until they are applied
No secret format here: the backup folders are plain files, and you can open them in Finder any time (HISTORY on the BACKUP card).
Disk space
- Unchanged files are hardlinked between versions and take no extra space.
- Before copying, M8Thor estimates the transfer and stops with "Not enough disk space for this backup." if the destination has less than the estimate plus 100 MB free. Better to stop early than to fail halfway.
- CHANGE DESTINATION… makes a standalone full copy, without links to your default store.
- Moving a version to the Trash frees only the files no other version shares, often far less than its size (on drives without hardlinks, e.g. exFAT, its full size). Rotation deletes the oldest versions permanently. See
man restore.

macOS housekeeping files (.DS_Store, ._*, .Spotlight-V100, .Trashes, .fseventsd) are not backed up or restored. Your M8 doesn't need them, and neither do your backups.
Unfinished backups
A backup is written to a hidden staging folder first and only appears as a version once it is complete. A failed run may be kept for diagnosis; it is never offered for restore and is removed on the next backup of that card.
Other locations
- Sample editor settings:
~/Library/Application Support/M8Thor/edits/ - Renders of chip tunes and a module's samples you staged:
~/Library/Application Support/M8Thor/Generated/(kept while a pending edit refers to them) - Waveform overviews:
~/Library/Application Support/M8Thor/waveforms/(a cache, up to 256 MB, oldest removed first; safe to delete) - Unpacked archives:
~/Library/Caches/M8Thor/Archives/(up to 2 GB); opened modules' samples and unpacked tunes:~/Library/Caches/M8Thor/(up to 256 MB). Caches, oldest removed first; safe to delete. - Mac folders you added: remembered by the app; the folders themselves are only read.
- Card names: remembered by the app; they never change the card, its volume name or its backup folder.
- Sets:
~/Library/Application Support/M8Thor/sets.json, references only (man sets). - Firmware:
~/Library/Application Support/M8Thor/firmware.json(what each M8 reported, which firmware M8Thor put on which card, the EULA you accepted) and the downloaded releases inFirmware/beside it (man firmware). - Diagnostic rsync logs:
~/Library/Logs/M8Thor/, deleted after 30 days - Exports (SAVE A COPY…, EXPORT…) can go anywhere you like, except inside your backup folder.
Updates, beta and licenses
man updates · Automatic updates, the beta period, reporting problems, open source notices
Updates
- M8Thor checks for updates automatically once a day (Sparkle), so you stay up to date without lifting a finger. You can switch this off in SETTINGS › Updates.
- Want to check yourself? M8Thor menu › "Check for Updates…", or SETTINGS › Updates › App updates › CHECK NOW.
- Updates keep working after the beta ends, so a follow-up version can always be installed.
Beta
- During the beta you get every feature. A notice reads "BETA ACCESS ENDS NOVEMBER 30, 2026". You can dismiss it; it comes back 14 days and 3 days before the end.
- Beta access ends for every installation after 30 November 2026 (the last day is complete in every time zone). The app then shows "M8THOR BETA HAS ENDED" with a link to m8thor.cc, and its features are locked. Your backups stay right where they are: plain folders you can open in Finder (
man storage).
Report a problem
Something not working the way it should? Reporting it only takes a minute. Use Help › "Report a Problem…", or REPORT PROBLEM on a failed backup. Describe what happened, check the REPORT PREVIEW (app, macOS and rsync version, card details, recent log), then COPY REPORT, SEND BY EMAIL (support@m8thor.cc) or OPEN ON GITHUB. The report is copied to the clipboard; your home folder path, UUIDs and card IDs are masked. Nothing is sent automatically.
Open source
M8Thor stands on the shoulders of open source. SETTINGS › About › Open source › LICENSES & SOURCE opens OPEN SOURCE & LICENSES: every open source part inside the app, its license readable in place and its files one click away in Finder — also after the beta has ended. The license texts and sources sit in the app at Contents/Resources/ThirdParty:
- rsync 3.4.4 (GNU GPL v3, full source) with popt, zlib and xxHash 0.8.3 compiled in.
- Sparkle (MIT), for app updates.
- libopenmpt 0.8.9 (BSD-3-Clause), which reads the tracker modules.
- m8thor-sid (GNU GPL v2 or later, source in the app) with libsidplayfp 3.1.1 (and its hashlib, MIT) and libresidfp 1.2.2, for SID tunes.
- m8thor-tfmx (GNU GPL v2 or later, source in the app) with libtfmxaudiodecoder 1.0.14, for TFMX tunes.
- ancient 2.3.0 (BSD-2-Clause, with tables from bzip2, bzip2 License) for DMS disk images and lhasa 0.6.0 (ISC) for LHA and LZH archives, both compiled into m8thor-unpack.
- The M8 display fonts (CC BY-SA 3.0) REMOTE draws the M8's screen with: Trash80's stealth57 and the large font after sm0hm's m8xl-ess, taken from m8c by Jonne Kokkonen (MIT).

Troubleshooting
man troubleshoot · What the messages mean and what to do
Card not found
- NO M8 DETECTED — connect your M8 via USB and switch it to USB drive mode.
- NO M8 CARD FOUND (N VOLUMES SCANNED) — volumes are mounted, but none has the M8 files (
System/STARTUP.m8s, orSongsandInstruments). Check the card, then SCAN NOW. For a card from another device, turn on "Recognize other SD cards". - SCAN ERROR — the volume scan failed; press RETRY.
- Restore shows NO CARD DETECTED — connect your M8 in USB drive mode or insert a FAT32/exFAT SD card, then REFRESH.
- macOS refused access to the card or the backup folder — OPEN SETTINGS opens System Settings › Privacy & Security › Files & Folders; allow M8Thor there, then RETRY.
Backup messages
- "Not enough disk space for this backup." — free space or pick another destination.
- "Unsupported rsync version. Select a supported rsync in Settings." — SETTINGS › Advanced, choose BUILT-IN.
- "Volume identity or mount path changed. Reconnect the card and select it again."
- "Source files disappeared during backup. The backup is incomplete and was not published." — something changed the card during the backup; run it again.
- "Backup transfer failed (rsync exit N). The backup was not published."
- "Backup verification failed: …" — the copy did not match the card. Don't panic: your previous backups are untouched. See "On mismatch" in
man settings. - "Nothing selected to back up." — select at least one folder or song.
- "Cannot start backup — … in progress on this card." — wait for the other operation.
- "Backup saved, but it holds far fewer files than the previous one (…). Older backups were kept — check the card." — the card may be empty or damaged; your older backups were kept.
- "Backup saved, but the "latest" link could not be updated: …"
- "Backup was cancelled." — no incomplete version was published.
Eject
- "Cannot eject while another operation is running." — wait until it has finished.
- "Failed to eject: …" — close apps that use the card and try again.
- Quitting during a backup asks "Operation in Progress": "Close Anyway" cancels it; an unfinished backup is discarded, a finished one is kept.
Restore messages
- "Partial restore: some files could not be transferred (rsync code 23). Check the log for details."
- "Restore incomplete: source files disappeared during transfer. …"
- "Another operation is already running for this card."
- "Backup source no longer exists on disk."
- "Restore was cancelled — the target may be partially restored"
- "M8 card disconnected during restore — the target may be partially restored"
- "rsync output parse failed — raw log saved to <path>" (during PREVIEW)
A partial restore is no drama: run the restore again to complete it.
Browse and editor
- CHOOSE A FOLDER OUTSIDE YOUR BACKUPS — exports can't go into the backup folder.
- "Refusing to overwrite the original sample. Choose a different name."
- NOT ON THIS MAC: <PLUGIN> (the slot reads MISSING · <PLUGIN>) — a plugin used in an FX slot is missing. Export and staging stop until you install it or remove the slot.
- FX n: NO SIGNAL — TO TARGET or MATCH found nothing to measure in the trim; the gains stay as they were.
- "Reference check failed: …" — M8Thor could not read the songs of this version, so USED IN and UNUSED are not available.
- NOT FOUND under MAC FOLDERS — the folder is gone or on a drive that isn't connected.
- NOT ENOUGH SPACE ON THE BACKUP DRIVE (ADD TO CARD) — staged files live on the backup drive until they are applied.
- NO TARGET SET (F) — right-click a set › MAKE TARGET first. SAVE A COPY FIRST (ADD TO SET) — the file lives in M8Thor's cache (an archive's or a module's); save a copy, then add that (
man sets).
Remote
- NO M8 CONNECTED — connect the M8 by USB. M8 IN DISK MODE — your M8 is in USB drive mode; EJECT CARD, and it comes back.
- PORT IN USE BY ANOTHER APP — another program has the M8's port open; quit it, then RETRY.
- CONNECTION LOST — the M8 went away, did not answer or could not be read; CONNECT again.
- MIC ACCESS DENIED — allow M8Thor in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone; the screen and the keys work without it. M8 AUDIO NOT FOUND — the M8's USB audio does not show up; M8Thor looks again when audio devices change. OUTPUT IS THE M8 — this Mac plays through the M8 itself, which would feed its sound back in; pick another output.
- EJECT FAILED — the card could not be ejected; the reason follows.
Firmware
- LAST CHECK FAILED (FIRMWARE row) — Dirtywave's GitHub could not be reached; M8Thor tries again later.
- DOWNLOAD FAILED — TRY LATER, or THE DOWNLOADED FIRMWARE IS DAMAGED — GET IT AGAIN.
- CARD IS BUSY — TRY AGAIN WHEN IT IS FREE — a backup, restore or apply is using the card.
- NOT ENOUGH SPACE ON THE CARD.
- THE CARD WENT AWAY OR CHANGED — NOTHING WAS LEFT ON IT, or THE CARD DID NOT READ BACK THE SAME — NOTHING WAS LEFT ON IT — copy again. THE CARD WENT AWAY DURING THE COPY — a temporary file may be left on it; M8Thor removes it the next time.
Archives and chip tunes
- NOT A ZIP ARCHIVE, THIS ZIP IS DAMAGED, ZIP64 IS NOT SUPPORTED, SPLIT ZIPS ARE NOT SUPPORTED, THIS ZIP IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN — see the limits in
man archives. - NOT AN LHA ARCHIVE, THIS LHA IS DAMAGED, THIS LHA IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN — the same for LHA/LZH archives; limits in
man archives. - NOT A DMS DISK IMAGE, THIS DMS IS DAMAGED, THIS DMS IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN, THIS DMS HOLDS NO AMIGA DISK (an MS-DOS or FMS disk packed as DMS).
- N FILES SKIPPED: ENCRYPTED / UNSUPPORTED METHOD / LINK — those files were left out; the rest opens.
- NOT AN AMIGA DISK IMAGE, NO FILES ON THIS DISK — A DEMO OR GAME KEEPS ITS MUSIC PACKED INSIDE (a demo or game disk with no module lying unpacked on it), THIS DISK IS DAMAGED, LONG FILENAME DISKS ARE NOT SUPPORTED.
- A module, SID or TFMX tune that doesn't play shows why under PLAY. A TFMX tune needs its sample file (
smpl.<name>) in the same folder.
Moving a version to the Trash
- THE LAST BACKUP OF A CARD IS ALWAYS KEPT — a card keeps at least one version.
- THIS BACKUP IS IN USE — a restore, a ZIP export, SAVE A COPY… or an open sample editor reads it; finish or close that first.
- THIS BACKUP HAS PENDING EDITS — apply or discard them first (
man stage). - A BACKUP OR RESTORE IS RUNNING — wait until it has finished (also while a backup waits for CONFIRM or counts down).
- THIS VOLUME HAS NO TRASH — e.g. some network drives; nothing is deleted.

Still stuck? Use Help › "Report a Problem…" (man updates) and describe what happened in your own words.
Erste Schritte
Wählst du keinen, landen deine Backups in
~/Backups.
Hier kannst du auch „Back up when connected“ einschalten (Auto-Backup, siehe
man backup).
Siehe
man backup.
Deine Karte sichern
Backup to <folder>/<set>?und eine Vorschau:N new,N modified,N deleted(aufgeklappt pro Ordner) oder „No changes detected“. - Optional, sobald ein früheres Backup existiert: Klapp FOLDERS auf und wähl, was gesichert wird (ALL / NONE).
SystemundThemessind immer dabei.
Was du bekommst
Auto-Backup
man remote).
Du siehst dann FIRMWARE <VERSION> NEEDS 6.6 OR NEWER ON THE M8, und USB INSTRUCTIONS öffnet Dirtywaves Seite zum Update per USB.
Liegt dort eine andere Datei mit diesem Namen: ANOTHER <FILE> IS ON THE CARD — NOTHING WAS CHANGED. Ist es dieselbe Datei: <FILE> IS ALREADY ON THE CARD.
THE CARD WAS NOT EJECTED FOR IT.
- Browse-Knopf („Browse backup contents“): öffnet BROWSE BACKUP.
.zipmit Fortschritt.
04 Selection
- Full Backup: stellt alle Ordner und Dateien der Version wieder her.
- Folders: Stammordner an- oder abwählen (ALL / NONE).
man stage.
- „Frees almost nothing — its files are shared with other backups.“
„You can put it back from the Trash.“ MOVE TO TRASH legt sie hinein.
- THE LAST BACKUP OF A CARD IS ALWAYS KEPT
- THIS BACKUP IS IN USE — ein Restore, ein ZIP-Export, SAVE A COPY… oder ein offener Sample-Editor liest es.
- THIS BACKUP HAS PENDING EDITS
- A BACKUP OR RESTORE IS RUNNING — auch während ein Backup auf CONFIRM wartet oder herunterzählt.
- THIS VOLUME HAS NO TRASH — z.
man sets.
man stage).
man mac.
man sets).
- Öffnest du den Sample-Editor, verstummt, was Browse gerade spielt.
Suche
- Irgendwo ein Sample verloren? ⌘F setzt den Fokus ins Suchfeld (SEARCH THIS BACKUP, in einem Ordner SEARCH THIS FOLDER; umschalten zwischen THIS FOLDER und WHOLE BACKUP).
- Das Filtermenü: ALL, SONGS, INSTRUMENTS, SAMPLES, THEMES, SCALES, BUNDLES, RENDERS, UNUSED, OTHER, HISTORY (Version einer anderen Karte: ALL, SAMPLES, OTHER, HISTORY).
man editor). - MODULE, SID TUNE, TFMX TUNE: siehe
man chips. ZIP ARCHIVE, LHA ARCHIVE, AMIGA DISK: sieheman archives. - Andere Dateien: KIND, SIZE, MODIFIED.
- SAVE A COPY… speichert jede Datei an einen beliebigen Ort außerhalb deines Backup-Ordners.
Was spielt
- Tracker-Module: jedes Format, das libopenmpt liest — MOD, XM, S3M, IT, Future Composer, SoundFX, Soundtracker, ICE, 669, DigiBooster, Symphonie, OctaMED, Oktalyzer und mehr — auch wenn sie mit PowerPacker, XPK, MMCMP oder UMX gepackt sind. Ob
LOOP (
man browse) wiederholt ihn.
- Die Vorschauen zeigen MODULE: TYPE, CHANNELS, LENGTH, SAMPLES, SIZE · SID TUNE: RELEASED, TUNES, CHIP, FORMAT, SIZE · TFMX TUNE: FORMAT, SONGS, VOICES, LENGTH, SAMPLES, SIZE.
man editor).
Packs/drums.zip→Packs/drums/…. Genauso bei den Samples eines geöffneten Moduls.
Grenzen
NO FILES ON THIS DISK — A DEMO OR GAME KEEPS ITS MUSIC PACKED INSIDE.
Ein DMS ohne Amiga-Disk (MS-DOS oder FMS) zeigt THIS DMS HOLDS NO AMIGA DISK, ein kaputtes THIS DMS IS DAMAGED.
- ADD TO CARD… Das Fenster zeigt FILES, SIZE, COPIED AS THEY ARE, CONVERTED, STAGED SIZE und FREE ON BACKUP DRIVE.
man stage).
Sets
STAGE SET FOR CARD
- Set fertig? STAGE SET FOR CARD…
man stage).
Sample-Editor
man editor · Ein Sample zuschneiden, faden, slicen, loopen und bearbeiten, ohne das Original anzufassen
Hier bekommen deine Samples ihren Feinschliff. HAS <FILE> OPEN — OPEN <OTHER> INSTEAD?
Du kannst also nichts kaputt machen, oder?
B. 37:38.84 OF 37:38.84. Rückgängig und Wiederholen: ⌘Z / ⇧⌘Z.
Signalweg und Pegel
Diesen Weg nimmt dein Klang: Slices → NORMALIZE → IN → FX → COMP → TAPE → OUT → LIMITER → DITHER auf 16 Bit.
Werkzeuge: Select (Pfeil), Add markers (Stift), Remove markers (Radierer); CLEAR entfernt alle. M setzt einen Marker am Abspielkopf.
- MARKERS: EVEN + APPLY macht gleich lange Slices.
- Pro Slice: GAIN (±24 dB), REVERSE, NORMALIZE, RESET, FADE IN, FADE OUT.
- Rechtsklick auf einen Slice: PLAY SLICE, REVERSE, NORMALIZE SLICE, RESET GAIN, RESET FADES, ZOOM TO SLICE, EXPORT SLICE…, STAGE SLICE FOR CARD…, DELETE MARKER. Rechtsklick anderswo: ADD MARKER HERE.
3 · LOOP
man keys, Controller:man midi. - ADD TO SET neben STAGE FOR CARD legt das Sample in ein Set oder in ein NEW SET… (
man sets).
Settings › MIDI
- YOUR KNOBS › Detect a knob: drück DETECT KNOB, dann dreh einen Regler langsam nach rechts (TURN THE KNOB SLOWLY TO THE RIGHT…), dann nach links (NOW TO THE LEFT…). M8Thor zeigt, was er sendet, z. B.
CLEAR ALL vergisst alle Zuordnungen; die Standards bleiben.
Regler und Encoder: deinen Controller einrichten
Du weißt nicht, was dein Controller sendet?
Vormerken
Drück im Editor STAGE FOR CARD (oder Rechtsklick auf einen Slice: STAGE SLICE FOR CARD…).
- SAVE AS NEW: schreibt eine neue Datei. Setz NEW FILENAME und FOLDER (beginnt mit
/Samples/). MAY BREAK“) und fragt dann „Really replace …?“.
FROM MAC FOLDER, FROM ZIP, FROM LHA, FROM ADF, FROM DMS, FROM MODULE, FROM SID, FROM TFMX. ADD TO CARD merkt viele auf einmal vor (
man mac), STAGE SET FOR CARD ein ganzes Set (man sets).
Weitere Zustände: DONE, RETRY, SOURCE MISSING ON CARD, MORE / FEWER SONGS NOW USE THIS SAMPLE.
- DISCARD ALL entfernt alle vorgemerkten Bearbeitungen (fragt vorher).
IN USE BY ANOTHER APP. Beende das Programm und drück dann RETRY. Weitere Meldungen:
man troubleshoot.
Tasten
man keys.
Disk-Modus
Dann siehst du CARD REMOVED WITHOUT EJECT — EJECT THE CARD BEFORE THE M8 LEAVES DISK MODE.
Einstellungen
Das meiste, was du an M8Thor einstellen kannst, findest du in SETTINGS. Du öffnest es mit ⌘5 (Tab) oder ⌘, (Einstellungsfenster). Die Seiten: General, Appearance, Backup, Verification, Notifications, Updates, Advanced, MIDI, Shortcuts, About.
General
- Launch on login — M8Thor startet, wenn du dich anmeldest.
Standard an.
Appearance
- Appearance — System, Light, Dark. Standard System.
- Accent — pink, lime, amber (Standard), cyan, violet.
- Text size — XS, S, M (Standard), L, XL.
Backup
- Backup directory — wohin deine Backup-Sets geschrieben werden; CHOOSE… (nicht während ein Backup oder Restore läuft). Standard
~/Backups.
Standard an.
Standard an.
- Failure — eine Mitteilung, wenn ein Backup fehlschlägt. Standard an.
Standard an.
Updates
Standard an (siehe
man updates).
man firmware). Nichts über dich oder dein M8 wird gesendet. Standard an.
Advanced
- Recognize other SD cards — sichert auch SD-Karten und USB-Laufwerke anderer Geräte (
man backup). Standard an.
Unbearbeitete Samples bleiben bitgenau. Standard an.
- rsync — BUILT-IN (das eigene rsync 3.4.4 von M8Thor, mit xxHash) oder HOMEBREW, wenn Homebrew-rsync installiert ist.
- rsync path, rsync version, Incremental (link-dest), Progress bar (--info=progress2) — reine Anzeigen zum gewählten rsync.
MIDI
Geräte und Anzeige, Detect a knob, Defaults for new knobs und die Zuordnungen erklärt dir man midi.
Shortcuts

Siehe
man restore.
Was ausgelassen wird
Menü M8Thor › „Check for Updates…“ oder SETTINGS › Updates › App updates › CHECK NOW.
man storage).
Fehlerhilfe
System/STARTUP.m8soderSongsundInstruments). Prüf die Karte, dann SCAN NOW.
Meldungen beim Backup
- „Not enough disk space for this backup.“ — mach Platz frei oder wähl ein anderes Ziel.
- „Unsupported rsync version. Select a supported rsync in Settings.“ — SETTINGS › Advanced, BUILT-IN wählen.
- „Volume identity or mount path changed. Reconnect the card and select it again.“
- „Source files disappeared during backup. The backup is incomplete and was not published.“ — etwas hat die Karte während des Backups verändert; starte es noch einmal.
- „Backup transfer failed (rsync exit N). The backup was not published.“
Siehe „On mismatch“ in

- „Backup was cancelled.“ — es wurde keine unvollständige Version veröffentlicht.
Auswerfen
- „Cannot eject while another operation is running.“ — warte, bis er fertig ist.
Meldungen beim Restore
- „Partial restore: some files could not be transferred (rsync code 23). Check the log for details.“
- „Restore incomplete: source files disappeared during transfer. …“
- „Another operation is already running for this card.“
- „Backup source no longer exists on disk.“
- „Restore was cancelled — the target may be partially restored“
- „M8 card disconnected during restore — the target may be partially restored“
- „rsync output parse failed — raw log saved to <path>“ (bei PREVIEW)
- CHOOSE A FOLDER OUTSIDE YOUR BACKUPS — Exporte dürfen nicht in den Backup-Ordner.
- „Refusing to overwrite the original sample. Choose a different name.“
- NO TARGET SET (F) — erst Rechtsklick auf ein Set › MAKE TARGET. SAVE A COPY FIRST (ADD TO SET) — die Datei liegt im Cache von M8Thor (aus einem Archiv oder Modul); sichere eine Kopie und füge die hinzu (
man sets).
Remote
- DOWNLOAD FAILED — TRY LATER, oder THE DOWNLOADED FIRMWARE IS DAMAGED — GET IT AGAIN.
- CARD IS BUSY — TRY AGAIN WHEN IT IS FREE — ein Backup, Restore oder Übertragen nutzt die Karte.
- NOT ENOUGH SPACE ON THE CARD.
- THE CARD WENT AWAY OR CHANGED — NOTHING WAS LEFT ON IT oder THE CARD DID NOT READ BACK THE SAME — NOTHING WAS LEFT ON IT — noch einmal kopieren. THE CARD WENT AWAY DURING THE COPY — eine temporäre Datei kann darauf liegen; M8Thor entfernt sie beim nächsten Mal.
Archive und Chip-Tunes
- NOT A ZIP ARCHIVE, THIS ZIP IS DAMAGED, ZIP64 IS NOT SUPPORTED, SPLIT ZIPS ARE NOT SUPPORTED, THIS ZIP IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN — siehe die Grenzen in
man archives. - NOT AN LHA ARCHIVE, THIS LHA IS DAMAGED, THIS LHA IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN — dasselbe für LHA/LZH-Archive; Grenzen in
man archives. - NOT A DMS DISK IMAGE, THIS DMS IS DAMAGED, THIS DMS IS TOO LARGE TO OPEN, THIS DMS HOLDS NO AMIGA DISK (eine MS-DOS- oder FMS-Disk, als DMS gepackt).
- N FILES SKIPPED: ENCRYPTED / UNSUPPORTED METHOD / LINK — diese Dateien wurden ausgelassen; der Rest öffnet sich.
- NOT AN AMIGA DISK IMAGE, NO FILES ON THIS DISK — A DEMO OR GAME KEEPS ITS MUSIC PACKED INSIDE (eine Demo- oder Spiele-Disk ohne ungepacktes Modul darauf), THIS DISK IS DAMAGED, LONG FILENAME DISKS ARE NOT SUPPORTED.
- THE LAST BACKUP OF A CARD IS ALWAYS KEPT — eine Karte behält mindestens eine Version.
- THIS BACKUP IS IN USE — ein Restore, ein ZIP-Export, SAVE A COPY… oder ein offener Sample-Editor liest es; beende oder schließ das zuerst.
- THIS BACKUP HAS PENDING EDITS — übertrag oder verwirf sie zuerst (
man stage). - A BACKUP OR RESTORE IS RUNNING — warte, bis er fertig ist (auch während ein Backup auf CONFIRM wartet oder herunterzählt).
- THIS VOLUME HAS NO TRASH — z. B. manche Netzlaufwerke; nichts wird gelöscht.
